Back Surgery
I hear it all the time; "I will never have back surgery". As a spine surgeon, I am humbled that anyone would let me operate on their back when so much is riding on the success of the surgery. I respect the overwhelming apprehension over back surgery. People trust others and their opinion. When...
I fell and my head snapped back?
You should see a spine specialist if these symptoms persist. I would also recommend first going to the ER to get a CT and/or MRI of your neck. Sounds like you have a pinched nerve in your neck. It could also be a stinger or burner (nerve traction), which should resolve within a day. READ MORE
What is the best position to sleep after spine surgery?
On your side or back are safe. On your back, a pillow under the knees relieves pressure on the back. On your side, a pillow between your legs can help nerve pain. READ MORE
Do all herniated discs need surgery?
No. Herniated discs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Depending on the morphology, a disc may go back into place or resort over time. Physical therapy and especially McKenzie type exercises can help this process and avoid surgery. An extruded disc is analogous to the jelly squirting out of a jelly doughnut. This type may resorb and shrink over time eliminating the need for surgery. READ MORE

Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Venu Vemuri, who serves patients in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dr. Vemuri is a highly trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in diseases of the spine with a particular expertise for and interest in minimally invasive spine surgeries. He is the Founder and CEO of miiSpine, an integrated spine pain clinic offering all treatments options for neck and back pain under one umbrella.
“We leverage value-based care and healthcare consumerism to offer concierge medicine without the expensive price tag, thereby providing excellent patient outcomes, lower costs, better patient experiences and happy doctors—think of it as our “quadruple aim” as stated on the practice’s website.
Dr. Vemuri created miiSpien as a response to the lackluster state of healthcare—specifically, spine care. Through his experience building a spine/pain clinic within an orthopedic practice in Louisville, he saw firsthand the benefits of multidisciplinary, integrated spine and pain care through his collaboration with a pain interventionist.
Building on his previous success, miiSpine provides a greater scope of multidisciplinary spine care services including: physical therapy, pain management, interventional pain procedures, yoga for back pain, cognitive behavior therapy, bracing, pain neuroscience education, virtual reality, medications, exercise counseling, spine imaging, BioTe hormone replacement, and spine surgery. Integrated spine care eliminates wasteful visits to non-spine specialists, saving healthcare dollars. Most importantly, miiSpine will cater to the patient as a customer, providing best-in-class customer service.
While Dr. Vemuri is a spine surgeon, he is committed to exhausting all non-surgical treatment options before considering surgical intervention. He frequently teaches patients about nutrition, yoga, exercise, lifestyle choices, physical therapy, and mindfulness. His primary objective is to help patients get back to enjoying their lives through restoring function from painful spinal conditions. His interest in minimally invasive surgeries is due in large part to increased chances for reduced blood loss, less tissue damage, and a faster recovery time for his patients.
With a background in medicine, he graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002. Following his position as Chief Resident during his final year of residency in orthopedic surgery, he went on to complete advanced training in orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery. He completed this additional training at Louisville’s Norton Leatherman Spine Center through their Spine Fellowship program.
Dedicated to surgical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery (AOBOS). The AOBOS is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
Pertaining to his professional affiliations, Dr. Vemuri is a member of the Greater Louisville Medical Society, the North American Spine Society, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, and the American Osteopathic Association. He is also affiliated with Metro Specialty Surgery Center and Baptist Health Louisville.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Vemuri is the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014), Patients’ Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012), and On-Time Doctor Award (2014).
A classically trained cellist, he holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Cello Performance. He also enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle through activities such as running, skiing, hiking, traveling, golfing, and cooking.
