I have been detected with a growth in my esophagus. Should I consult a cardiothoracic surgeon?
Not sure where the growth is or how it was found. Either way, you need to see a GI physician, a thoracic oncologist, or a thoracic surgeon so they can take a good history, do a physical exam, and order the appropriate tests to work up the growth you have so a diagnosis can be made and a treatment plan developed. What is the difference between a cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon?
Cardiologists help with the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems related to the heart. They can also do procedures like cardiac caths, PCI (stents), etc. Cardiothoracic surgeons help with the surgical treatment of diseases of the heart, lungs, and esophagus. Cardiologists will refer them patients that need CABG, valve procedures, etc. READ MORE
My son is 8 years old and has been detected with a hole in the heart. Is surgery the only option?
Not sure where the hole in the heart is (atrial septum or ventricular septum). Either way, if surgery is needed, it is very safe and effective (complications are not very common unless your son is very sick or has problems with elevated pressures in the heart or heart failure). You should consult with a interventional pediatric cardiologist to see if there is a possible option of closing the hole with a device and not having open heart surgery. READ MORE
After my bypass surgery, I am having heavy bleeding during my periods. Could there be a connection?
You need to notify your ct surgeon and let him know what is happening. It may be related to anitplatelet meds or anticoagulants you may taking. He can also determine if you need a gyn exam. READ MORE
How can I tell if it's a heart attack or just a chest pain?
There can be many reasons for chest pain. The simple way for you to address this issue is to see a cardiologist who can take a good history, review your symptoms in detail, and order appropriate lab and other diagnostic tests as needed. Sometimes, chest pain related to the heart can be missed. Not good if that is the case. READ MORE
My grandfather is 87 years old and has suffered a heart attack. What should we do?
He should see a cardiologist who will asses his heart function and evidence of CAD. A cardiologist will also asses his risk factors and develop a treatment plan for him. READ MORE

Even though all my tests seem normal, I am having chest pain. What could be the reason?
Not knowing more about the chest pain and assuming all the appropriate cardiac tests we performed and are negative, one could consider the chest wall or the esophagus as a possible source. Would discuss evaluations of these issues with your medical internist. READ MORE
My son has a hole in the heart. What is the treatment procedure?
Not sure where the hole in the heart is, but most of reasonable size and sufficient flow usually require closure with interventional techniques or surgery. Your son should see a pediatric cardiologist who will do appropriate testing and recommend the desired treatment. It should take care of his problem. READ MORE
Does variation in TMT indicate anything serious?
Not sure if you have other risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, obesity, lack of exercise, blood lipid abnormalities, etc., but would see your cardiologist on a regular basis. Not sure what parameters you are referring to on your TMT test, but again, would advise seeing your cardiologist on a regular basis so he or she can follow the results of repeated TMT test if indicated or order additional tests to further define any cardiac issues. How long does it take for someone to recover from a cardiac surgery?
Difficult question to answer not knowing what procedure was required when he was readmitted to the ICU (skin stitches or sternal wires were the problem). Most patients rebound pretty quickly with wound complications, unless an infection is part of the problem as supposed to cardiac problems. Overall, he should steadily improve. READ MORE
Don't want to have surgery for enlarged heart--any other options?
There needs to be a diagnostic work-up to determine the cause for your enlarged heart. Once that is known, then we can discuss treatment and whether surgery is needed or not. READ MORE
Heart transplant question
Acute rejection tends to occur more in the first year after heart transplantation. The patient may or may not have symptoms, sometimes the patient can be very sick. It is diagnosed by endomyocardial biopsy, which is routinely done at certain intervals after the heart transplant procedure. Treatment usually requires additional immunosuppression. READ MORE
