Dr. David Zagzag, a distinguished neuropathologist at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Health, is celebrated for his significant contributions to the field of brain tumor research and treatment. With over three decades of experience, Dr. Zagzag’s dedication to advancing medical science has positioned him as a leading figure in one of the nation’s foremost academic medical centers.

Academically, his journey into medicine began at the age of 16 when an introduction to a medical library sparked his fascination with the complexities of the human brain. His early experiences laid the foundation for a career devoted to understanding and improving therapies for patients suffering from brain tumors. After earning his medical degree from Lariboisiere-Saint-Louis School of Medicine in Paris in 1984, he pursued a Ph.D. in Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University, further solidifying his expertise in the field.

As a Professor of Pathology and Neurosurgery, Dr. Zagzag not only leads the Division of Neuropathology at NYU Langone Health, one of the largest divisions of its kind in the country but also plays a vital role in educating the next generation of medical professionals. His commitment to teaching has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious NYU All-University Distinguished Teaching Award.

Moreover, he oversees a clinical laboratory that processes over 1,900 neurological specimens each year, including more than 650 tumor cases, demonstrating his extensive clinical expertise. The Division of Neuropathology offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services for various neurological conditions, utilizing advanced immunohistochemical stains and comprehensive molecular testing to provide accurate diagnoses for patients.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Zagzag leads the Microvascular and Molecular Neuro-Oncology Laboratory, where his research team investigates the molecular mechanisms of glioma progression and the tumor microenvironment. His work aims to uncover innovative therapeutic strategies to improve survival rates for patients diagnosed with brain tumors. Dr. Zagzag’s research endeavors have garnered support from prestigious organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society.

An accomplished author, he has published over 275 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, contributing significantly to the body of knowledge in neuropathology. His involvement with the World Health Organization and professional societies underscores his commitment to advancing the field. He has received numerous awards, including the Lucien J. Rubinstein Award, recognizing his excellence in clinical science.

Recently, Dr. Zagzag’s achievements were honored with a feature on the iconic Reuters Billboard in Times Square, marking a significant recognition of his influence and leadership in neuropathology.
