In regards to his education, Dr. Hanson graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1985 giving him over three decades of experience in his field. He then completed his family medicine residency with the Hennepin County Medical Center. 

To stay up to date in his field, he remains Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Founded in 1969, ABFM is a not-for-profit, private organization whose mission is to improve the health of the public through Board Certification, Residency Training, Research, Leadership Development, and promoting the development of the specialty of Family Medicine.

Due to his expertise he has been awarded the Bridges to Excellence: Physician Office Systems Recognition Program in 2019.
