Get to know Vascular & Interventional Radiologist Dr. Christopher Looney, who serves patients in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Looney is a Vascular & Interventional Radiologist with University Hospital, located in Augusta, Georgia. University Hospital has a long tradition of service with roots that go deep into the community. The oldest hospital in the Augusta area and the second oldest in the state of Georgia, University’s volunteer trustees and medical staff have never lost sight of the founders’ original mission of improving the delivery of healthcare to the people of the community. Dr. Looney’s care philosophy states: “Every patient has different needs and wishes. I understand that. I deliver personalized and cutting edge medical care.” Dr. Looney received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 2006. The following year, he completed an internship at Carilion Clinic. In 2011, he completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center, followed by his fellowship training at the same medical center in 2012. Dr. Looney is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology, and Vascular & Interventional Radiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is one of 24 national medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The board’s commitments include: helping patients; providing information about the board certification process and which doctors are board certified; supporting physicians; creating programs that assist doctors in staying current in their field and improving their practices; collaborating with healthcare leaders; fostering initiatives for the promotion and monitoring of healthcare quality; transforming healthcare; and increasing awareness of the importance of board certification and lifelong learning in assuring quality care. Interventional radiology (IR), sometimes known as vascular and interventional radiology (VIR), is a radiology specialty which provides minimally invasive image-guided diagnosis and treatment of disease. As a Vascular & Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Looney uses several tools to precisely target and treat disease, as well as performs procedures to provide quality, efficient and personalized radiographic care to the people of the CSRA. Some of the procedures that he performs include percutaneous tumor ablation, image guided biopsies, transjugular liver biopsies, and arterial/venous embolization – among others. Dr. Looney speaks multiple languages, including Russian.
