4 Ways to Handle Burnout
It is becoming increasingly recognized that Western culture tends to parade and esteem those who are busy. Come on, let’s be real. Don’t you want an extra badge of honor when you talk about working 60 hours a week on your job and then going home to run your kids to activities and events all...
How do I get over the loss of my father?
My condolences for the loss of your father. While grief is a common human experience, it is very unique for each individual and family. Grief happens in dynamic phases rather than stages. I would encourage you to take the time you need to get through the loss and not “over” it. Many people find it helpful to have the support of family, friends, church, or a mental health provider for individual or group therapy. READ MORE
How can I overcome negativity at my work place?
Work stress can be tough because we spend so much time there. Sounds like you could benefit from taking a personal inventory to identify what’s important to you. Here are a few questions you may find helpful: Would I be bored at this job even if the people weren’t negative? How can I be cordial to my coworkers without promoting their negativity? Is the reputation and pay of my job worth the sacrifice of my mental health? READ MORE
What causes post natal depression in women?
Unfortunately, some women suffer from postpartum depression. Common causes are rapid change in hormones following the birth of the baby and sleep deprivation from caring for the new baby (and potentially other children). I would encourage you to have your sister talk to her doctor about specific factors that may be contributing to her current diagnosis. Medication and/or therapy are known to be effective treatment options. READ MORE
What causes my brain to think negatively most of the time?
Negative thinking can be the result of negative environment, habit, depression, etc. Explore whether you find yourself having a common thread negative thoughts (e.g. “I’m not good enough.” “Things will never turn around for me.”). There are a ton of self-help books out there but a mental health professional is a great resource to help you identify and address negative thinking. READ MORE
My son is 16 years old and afraid of his exams. Should I send him to a psychologist?
Taking him to a psychologist could be a good option. A certain amount of anxiety isn’t necessarily “bad” but when it impacts functioning is what makes it concerning. Have you considered asking him about the root of his extreme anxiety? Do you notice whether you are unintentionally sending mixed signals regarding his performance on the test and other areas of his life? Help him to find balance between doing his best given the importance of the test as well as not being tied to one particular outcome. In other words, help him to give himself credit for his efforts and not only certain outcomes. His high school counselor is also another great resource. READ MORE
Could there be another reason for my breathlessness or is it anxiety?
Going through a divorce is a difficult phase of life. Some people’s distress shows up in physical symptoms. However, I would encourage you to see your medical provider to rule out any medical explanations. You may also want to consider seeing a mental health provider or spiritual advisor (if you prefer) to help you process recent events in your life. Take care. READ MORE
Is there a link between loss of appetite and depression?
Yes, change in appetite (increased or decreased) is a common symptom of depression. Encourage your father to speak to a medical professional to determine if there are other explanations including side effects of medications. Depression is a common experience in older adults so a medical or mental health provider can help your father discuss how the medical problems are impacting his mood. READ MORE
Is forgetfulness a mental illness?
Forgetfulness is a common human experience. Unless there has been significant brain damage with a major medical event like a stroke, traumatic brain injury with a significant loss of consciousness, or brain tumor, memory concerns are typically the result of inattention often found in mental illnesses like mood disorders or anxiety. Follow up with your medical and/or mental health provider. READ MORE

For example, painful sex can have medical and/or mental explanations. It depends on the factors surrounding her desire not to have sex. Does the treatment for depression have to be continuous?
I think it depends on what you mean by “treatment” as that could mean psychotherapy or medication or both. Taking a short break from treatment while you’re in therapy is usually okay. I would encourage you to speak to your mental health provider to discuss his or her concerns as well as yours. You may be able to develop a plan to work on certain areas even on vacation and identify resources in the vacation area in case of a mental health emergency. READ MORE

What is neuropsychology?
A neuropsychologist is licensed psychologist with specialized training in neuropsychological testing. This means they are able to conduct a clinical interview with you to ask questions about your brain injury, how you were functioning before and after the injury, give you a series of tests, and then make a diagnosis (if appropriate). The cool aspect about them is that they can also tease out any true cognitive problems from perceived cognitive problems that may be stemming from psychiatric illnesses like depression or anxiety. What many patients find helpful are the recommendations they provide based on their examination. READ MORE
