Get to know Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Cornelia R. Graves, who serves patients in Nashville, Tennessee.

A fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Graves is the Medical Director of Tennessee Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Tennessee Maternal Fetal Medicine provides expert medical care to patients seeking prenatal diagnosis or requiring specialized care for a medical condition, fetal concern, or obstetrical complication.

Completing her undergraduate education at Baylor University, Dr. Graves received her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and was recipient of the Purdue Frederick Award for Excellence in Women’s Healthcare. 

She went on to complete her internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Vanderbilt University. During her fellowship, Dr. Graves received special training in obstetrical critical care and is a nationally recognized expert in maternal disease states. 

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and critical care medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Subsequently, Dr. Graves served as the Director of Obstetrical Critical Care, the Director of the maternal section of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Division Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the Assistant Dean for Diversity at Vanderbilt University. She is currently the Medical Director for Perinatal Services at Baptist Hospital.

As for her academic appointment, she serves as a Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine – Nashville.

Actively involved in research, Dr. Graves has served as an investigator on studies involving asthma, HIV, diabetes, and drug addiction during pregnancy. She is also proficient in Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) and is NTQR certified. She is extensively published and has received numerous teaching, research, professional and community awards.

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies go through changes. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding or high blood pressure.

Recognized as a Top Doctor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Graves is frequently invited to share her expertise in both national and international forums. She was also recently selected among Nashville Business Journal’s Best Doctors of 2014, and has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009).
