Dr. Michael Acquista D.D.S.'s Expert Contributions
Healthy Eating
Healthy eating: It is so important, but Doctors don't learn much about it. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General, suggested we should, but not much has happened. I want that to change. I lecture to other Doctors and my patients about it, and on smilebayridge.com, I have hyperlinks to...
Which toothpaste is best for teeth whitening?

Can you get a dental bridge for molars?
Yes READ MORE
What is the best treatment for a gum infection?
A visit to the dentist will diagnose if it is related to the gums, the tooth, or something else. You don’t know that. They also will prescribe the appropriate antibiotic and treat it accordingly, if needed. READ MORE
What toothpaste is best for veneers?
It really doesn't matter. Veneers are plaque resistant. However, you might want to avoid whitening toothpastes, as they are more abrasive. The least abrasive toothpastes are baking soda-containing pastes such as Arm & Hammer. I like Colgate. READ MORE
Can Invisalign cause sore gums?
Probably. If so, see your dentist. They can make an adjustment. READ MORE
How can I fix a gap in my front teeth without braces?
If it is not too large, you can get porcelain laminates. READ MORE
How can I restore my enamel after braces?
If you did not meticulously clean around the brackets for the duration of your braces, it may be too late. Ask your dentist. See if you are a candidate for microabrasion. READ MORE
How long do implant bridges last?
10 years is considered successful, but I have patients with implants over 20 years. Usually, if they are successful for the first year, that is a good sign. It depends on your health, whether you smoke, the amount and density of bone surrounding, and the experience of the surgeon as well as your oral hygiene. Make sure you ask how to clean under and around. READ MORE
Does a dental bridge feel natural?
Fixed bridges feel natural. READ MORE
How long will my jaw hurt after tooth extraction?
Not enough information. Call your dentist and ask them. READ MORE
How long do gum line fillings last?
All fillings are considered to be successful if they last for 10 years. That depends on your diet, hygiene, and overall rate of decay and genetics among other variables. READ MORE
Is swelling normal after getting wisdom teeth out?
It can happen. It might be a good idea to take a full course of antibiotics if you are not already. Notify your doctor. READ MORE
Can I use mouthwash if I have periodontal disease?
It really doesn’t help unless you don’t brush your teeth. Brushing removes 75% of the plaque on the broad surfaces of the teeth. Listerine kills the same 75%, so I would rather brush and spit out the plaque instead of rinsing with Listerine and having a bunch of dead plaque in my mouth. What you really need to do is floss or pick in between the teeth daily to remove the remaining 25% of plaque. READ MORE
Do you need a root canal before a crown?
No. Not always. If the tooth had no decay, it may not need it, but the tooth might need root canal after the crown is cemented permanently anyway. There is a chance the pulp dies for one reason or another, and then the dentist must put a hole through the crown, usually, and that is another problem. READ MORE
How can I get plaque off my teeth at home with braces?
Can use a proxybrush available in the pharmacy, and a waterpik would help. Also, Act is a fluoride rinse. Only use at bedtime after finished eating and drinking. Brush teeth, rinse with water and then fill bottle cap to line and swish for one minute. Then spit it out. Continue to spit out for a minute, but do not rinse with water. Use 3 times per week to help reduce decay potential. READ MORE
Does mouthwash burning mean its working?
If you brush your teeth, you remove 75% of the plaque on the broad surfaces of the teeth. You need to floss to get the last 25%. Listerine only kills plaque on the 75% you can reach with your brush. You are wasting time and money with mouthwash. Just brush and remove the plaque instead of rinsing and leaving all that dead plaque in your mouth. READ MORE
How long does a dental implant procedure take?
It depends. Is there bone grafting involved? Generally speaking, I would say an hour or less. READ MORE
