Dr. Poku’s Expertise in Electrophysiology and Commitment to Patient Care Sets Him Apart

Dr. Joseph Poku, MD, FACC, FHRS, a distinguished cardiac electrophysiologist, has been at the forefront of heart health in Macon, Georgia for nearly two decades. Specializing in testing procedures that evaluate the electrical system of the heart, he is dedicated to diagnosing and treating irregular heartbeats, offering patients a path towards improved cardiac wellness.

With a strong educational background from renowned institutions, Dr. Poku brings a wealth of expertise to his practice. He studied at Clark University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors in Mathematics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Subsequently, he obtained his Medical Degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, after which he completed his internship and residency at Duke University, where he served as assistant chief resident. 

Further honing his skills in treating heart rhythm disorders, Dr. Poku completed his fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiology at the prestigious Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received numerous accolades including Cardiology Fellows Excellence Abstract Award and Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH Research Training Grant.

Board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and clinical electrophysiology, Dr. Poku’s commitment to advancing patient care is evident through his continuous pursuit of knowledge and skill development. His passion for cardiac electrophysiology led him to join Georgia Arrhythmia Consultants and Research Initiative in 2006. 

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Poku is actively involved in academic and professional organizations. He serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Mercer School of Medicine and is a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS). 

His commitment to community engagement is demonstrated through his roles on the Board of Trustees for Clark University, as a delegate to the Georgia Chapter of the ACC, and as Treasurer for the Association of Black Cardiologists, where he advocates for diversity and inclusivity in the field of cardiology.

Dr. Poku’s exemplary patient care, coupled with his expertise in cardiac electrophysiology, continues to positively impact the heart health of individuals in Macon, Georgia and beyond.
