  • How do you floss under braces?

One of the toughest things to do with braces is maintain a proper and effective oral hygiene regimen. Flossing is very time consuming but necessary. Even someone that is doing a great job brushing with braces, can end up have multiple cavities between teeth if they are not flossing. To make flossing more manageable. I tell my patients to take it out of the bathroom. Floss while watching TV, or some other hands free distraction. This way it doesn't seem so mundane and an arduous task. Methods for flossing with braces that we recommend are: 1) Airflosser by Phillips Sonicare 2) Platypus Orthodontic Flossers 3) Floss Threader or Superfloss I would also ask at your next orthodontic appointment what they recommend and ask for a demonstration. An orthodontist knows that at some point you &/ or child will be a walking billboard for their practice, and they will want you to have not only a beautiful smile but a healthy one also. READ MORE

  • Will antibiotics stop tooth pain?

Depending on the reason for the pain it could have the ability to help. Most times the advantages of taking an antibiotic is to prevent bacterial growth. If the bacteria is growing in a confined space the increased pressure would cause pain and swelling. The bacteria will not have the ability to grow (split) while being inhibited by the antibiotic., therefore decreasing the pain associated with the increased pressure READ MORE

  • Why does my son keep getting cavities?

This is a question that has so many possibilities for an answer. Some of the factors that can determine a child's abilities for getting cavities are 1) diet 2) saliva 3) amount of bacteria An example, using what you had expressed could be; a 12 year old brushing 2 times a day for 20 seconds each time, not flossing at all. During the day drinking coffee with sugar and milk. Along with sports drinks during the day. Three meals with many simple carbohydrates and snacking during the day. Now I have exaggerated a particular situation, but take pieces of it and you can still have a 12 year old that brushes twice a day that is getting multiple cavities. Sorry i have not made it a simple answer to your son's cavity issue. But I hope maybe it will give you some places to look as to where the potential areas of increased cavity potential may be.
