Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Andrew A. Pieper, who serves patients in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Pieper is a board-certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist in the Department of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where he serves as Professor and Morley Mather Chair in Neuropsychiatry. He also serves as Psychiatrist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center (VAMC), and as Investigator in the University Hospitals Harrington Discovery Institute, where he is the Director of the Neurotherapeutics Center.
Dr. Pieper is devoted to patient care and basic science research applied to disease, most keenly focused on neurodegeneration. Clinically, he maintains an active Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic at the VAMC. His goal is to understand and investigate human disorders in order to foster development of new neuroprotective strategies to support brain health. Dr. Pieper has received numerous honors, including the Staglin Family Rising Star Research Award from the International Mental Health Research Organization and elected membership to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
After graduating from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, Dr. Pieper earned his MD and PhD (Neuroscience) degrees from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also conducted his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and postdoctoral fellowship in Biochemistry at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSWMC). He joined the faculty at UTSWMC from 2006 until 2012, after which he moved to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine where he became Director of Translational Neuroscience. In 2018, Dr. Pieper moved to Cleveland to join University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, and the Louis Stokes VAMC.
Licensed to practice medicine in Ohio, he is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
