Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Yanping Yu, who serves patients in Stony Brook, New York.

Well-versed in the field of nephrology, Dr. Yu is affiliated with Long Island Nephrology – Stony Brook.

In collaboration with Catolic Health, she maintains hospital privileges at St. Charles Hospital and St. Catherine of Siena Hospital. She specializes in a wide variety of kidney disorders including acute and chronic kidney diseases, diabetic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, hypertension, electrolyte disorders and glomerular diseases.

Originally from China, Dr. Yu received her medical degree from the Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Science in 1989. After relocating to the United States, she completed her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in nephrology at NYU Langone Tisch Hospital in 1996 and 1998, respectively.

An authority in her field, the doctor is board-certified in nephrology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
