Get to know Transplant Hepatologist Dr. Rashid Z. Syed, who serves patients in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Syed is a transplant hepatologist with board certification in internal medicine and gastroenterology. His clinical interests include liver transplantation, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and cirrhosis.

Dr. Syed is currently serving patients at Tampa General Medical Group (TGMG) in Tampa, Florida. TGMG is an affiliate of Tampa General Hospital and includes physicians specializing in cardiology, digestive disorders, endocrinology, family practice, hepatology (liver disease), internal medicine, organ transplantation, pediatrics, and surgery. TGMG physicians provide comprehensive health services, ranging from wellness and primary care to the most complex specialty care and post-acute services.

After graduating from Aga Khan University Medical College, Dr. Syed completed his residency in internal medicine at Westchester Medical Center, where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident and earned the Best Overall Resident Award. He then completed his fellowship training in hepatology / transplant hepatology at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Syed has been actively involved in research. His most recent research involved assessing the success rate of liver transplant in patients with a combination of end-stage liver disease and severe valvular heart disease.

Dr. Syed holds professional memberships with the American Medical Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Transplant hepatology represents advanced training in gastroenterology and focuses on the management of advanced liver disease. Training provides a comprehensive understanding of hepatopathology and diagnostic techniques needed to evaluate and manage potential liver transplant patients. Transplant hepatologists, like Dr. Syed, also manage transplant patients both before and after transplantation, and therefore have expertise in managing issues such as immunosuppression and transplant-associated infectious diseases.

In addition to English, Dr. Syed speaks Urdu and Hindi.
