Academically, Dr. Vélez completed medical school at the Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud “CES” in her country of origin, Colombia. She then moved to San Antonio, Texas where she completed her residency training in psychiatry in 2005 and two fellowships, in geriatric psychiatry in 2006 and clinical neurophysiology in 2007, at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Following her training, the doctor attained board certification in psychiatry and sleep medicine through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
Prior to her current engagement, Dr. Vélez worked as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center for seven years. There, she worked extensively with patients with neurological conditions and psychiatric comorbidities. During that time, she was the Medical Director of the Sleep Lab at University Hospital where she interpreted polysomnograms as well as MSLTS on a daily basis.
