Dr. Stauffer is the CEO and Founder of Alta Life Sciences, LLC., a biotech/operational advisory firm based in Sarasota, FL. He is also the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Antibe Therapeutics, a Toronto based public biotech. Since 2004 he has served as CMO in both public and private specialty pharma/biotech companies. In May 2022 he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Biofuse Medical Technologies, a Florida based surgical technology company. He became Board Chairman in January 2023.
He was previously the CMO at Alpharma Pharmaceuticals; and the architect of the clinical development program for EMBEDA, the first abuse-deterrent long-acting opioid analgesic approved by the FDA. His medical practice and clinical research experience span over 25 years; having built teams of physicians, scientists, medical science liaisons, regulators, and safety experts in support of clinical development projects, marketed brand drugs and devices. Areas of expertise include acute and chronic pain/inflammation, arthritis, opioid use disorder, oncology supportive care, pruritus, peri-operative medicine, neuroanesthesia and neonatal-adult critical care. He has been intimately involved with raising a total of $650M of new equity and/or deal related financing between 2010-2021 at four different companies.
He practiced clinically for eight years, first as a Navy general medicine physician and then as an Anesthesiologist. He completed residency training in Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital and maintained an appointment as part-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine through 2016. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and his MBA from a joint program (TRIUM) between New York University, Stern School of Business, London School of Economics (LSE) and HEC (Hautes Etudes Commerciales) School of Management in Paris. Dr. Stauffer is a veteran of the US Navy; honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander after serving 10 years as a Naval Medical Officer.
Joe began his industry career as Global Medical Director at Abbott Laboratories. In that role he was responsible forPhase I-III trials and medical affairs support of hospital and retail marketed drugs/devices. Prior to Abbott he worked atFDA as a Medical Review Officer in the Anti-Inflammatory & Analgesic Division of the Center for Drug Evaluationand Research. He led global clinical development, clinical operations, pharmacovigilance, biometrics, regulatory and medical affairs teams at Alpharma and Ikaria; both ofwhich were acquired in $1.6B cash deals in 2009 and 2014, respectively.

A seasoned Anesthesiologist, Dr. Stauffer is an executive biotech physician and CEO/Founder of Alta Life Sciences, LLC, a pharmaceutical and investment advisory firm based in Sarasota, Florida. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of BioFuse Medical Technologies, a Medical Device company based in Melbourne, Florida. He also serves as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Antibe Therapeutics, a Toronto-based public biotech firm.
Dr. Stauffer completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital and remained on Adjunct faculty as Clinical Instructor/Assistant Professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 2000-2016. He served in the US Navy for 10 years as a Medical Officer, where he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander. He practiced clinically for eight years, first as a Navy general medicine physician and then as an Anesthesiologist.
Before embarking on his professional journey, he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and his MBA from a joint program (TRIUM) between New York University, Stern School of Business, London School of Economics (LSE), and HEC (Hautes Etudes Commerciales) School of Management in Paris.
Recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (FAPCR), he started his industry career as a Medical Director at Abbott Labs and worked at FDA as a Medical Review Officer. In 2005, at the invitation of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, he served as an expert member of the FDA/Mayo Clinic Working group on Patient Reported Outcomes and co-authored the supportive paper (Value in Health, Nov/Dec 2007) on validation of self-reported outcome measures for oncology trials. This consortium presented their consensus to the FDA at an open meeting in February 2006 as part of the rollout of the FDA Guidance for Industry, Patient- Reported Outcome Measures: Use in Medical Product Development to Support Labeling Claims.
He has served as an expert manuscript reviewer for Mayo Clinic Proceedings (2006), Pain Medicine (2014-17), and Therapeutic Advances in Drug Therapy (2014). In 2007 he was named one of the 100 Most Inspiring People by PharmaVOICE magazine. From 2014-2015 he served on the Board of Directors of TrialScope, a provider of technology enhanced clinical trial solutions and services. In 2015 he joined the Director Network of Edison Partners, a growth equity firm based in Princeton, NJ.
To add to his impressive background, Dr. Stauffer has served as CMO in both public and private specialty device, pharma, and biotech companies. He was the SVP & CMO of Global Medical Operations at Ikaria, where he led a global team of medical science liaisons, clinical scientists, and medical directors in support of the company’s pharmaceutical and medical device portfolio.
He has been involved in raising a total of $650M of new equity and/or deal-related financing between 2010-2021 at four different companies, demonstrating his financial acumen and expertise in the biotech industry.
