Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. John R. Cooke, who serves patients in Montclair, New Jersey.

Dr. Cooke is a board-certified psychiatrist who serves patients at his private practice – John Cooke, MD, LLC – in Montclair, New Jersey. He provides services such as medication management, psychotherapy, psychiatric reports and evaluations, as well as collaboration with other behavioral health providers.

At his practice, Dr. Cooke seeks to establish a solid therapeutic relationship with all of his patients, seeing them for five hour-long sessions before referring them to therapists. Thereafter, he continues to see the patient once a month, working closely with his non-MD colleagues to provide the appropriate medication treatments, as well as the necessary psychotherapy for an integrated approach. Those patients who prefer to see him for both medication management and therapy are also welcome.

With a diverse background in medicine, Dr. Cooke has also been an emergency physician. It is his professional conviction that one can live a meaningful and fulfilling life only through addressing the health of both the mind and body. Thus, effective psychiatry must assess all aspects of a patient’s condition. 

A graduate of the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. 

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. They are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.
