Akl completed four years of residency training in general Obstetrics and Gynecology at Michigan State University followed by three additional years of fellowship training in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS/Urogynecology) at Mayo Clinic and Loyola University in Chicago, two of the best training programs in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive surgery (Urogynecology) nationwide and considered two of the leading institutions in pelvic floor research around the world.
Urogynecology is a unique and very competitive field that combines aspects of urology, gynecology and colorectal surgery. An additional two years of training is required for urologists and three additional years for gynecologists to become a certified urogynecologist.
Dr. A. Akl provides optimum care for women with pelvic floor disorders including but not limited to; prolapse or a sensation of heaviness or a bulge, urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, complications from previous pelvic surgery including mesh, recurrent urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, difficult gynecological cases, and vaginal congenital anomalies, adhesions or strictures. Dr. Akl received numerous awards including the outstanding resident educators’ award three years in a row, best research in Ob/Gyn award and the American Urogynecology Society Resident Award. Dr. Akl presented multiple presentations at national and international scientific society meetings and served as a proctor for the American Urogynecology Society (AUGS) and the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) annual scientific meetings.

Dr. Akl has been successfully treating patients with interstitial cystitis (IC) since 2015 and has noticed that patients with IC have been significantly underdiagnosed and suffer for a long period of time before reaching the diagnosis of IC , even once diagnosed they are not able to get the right treatment for their IC symptoms due to lack of resources for patients and availability of trained physicians that could treat IC.
