As an experienced sports medicine specialist, Dr. Hennessy practices within The Orthopedic Group with offices in California, Charleroi, and Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. He treats patients of all ages and all types of musculoskeletal injuries with an emphasis on conservative, non-surgical management. His other areas of focus include concussion management, running medicine, and regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma.
In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
With a broad educational background, Dr. Hennessy studied Neuroscience and Psychology at Allegheny College. He then received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. He completed a fellowship with UPMC Sports Medicine, during which he was the fellowship team physician for the Fox Chapel High School football team, the Saint Vincent College football team, and the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team.
During his fellowship, he provided medical coverage to the University of Pittsburgh and Robert Morris University Men’s/Women’s soccer, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams. In addition, he provided medical care to the PGA Tour; the Virginia Tech, Duquesne University Pittsburgh Central Catholic football teams; the Pittsburgh Marathon and EQT Ten-Mile Race; and the University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving teams.
Playing an active role in his field, Dr. Hennessey is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. A sports medicine specialist is a physician with significant specialized training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury.
Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Hennessy received the “Exceptional Resident Teacher” Award from UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine, and the “Exceptional Resident Teacher” and “Exceptional Role Model” awards from Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine.
