Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. John Frederick Kuhn III, who serves patients in Muncie, Indiana.

Dr. Kuhn III is an experienced, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon whose areas of interest include adult cardiac surgery, adult general thoracic surgery, minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, and cardiovascular surgery. A part of IU Health, he is in practice with IU Health Ball Memorial physicians group in Muncie, Indiana.

Coming from three generations of doctors, Dr. Kuhn III realized at a young age that he enjoyed serving others and was good at the branches of science. In 1996, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He then went on to perform his residency in general surgery 1996 – 2002 and then in thoracic surgery at the University of Louisville in 2002 and 2004, respectively. 

With over 16 years of experience in his field, the doctor is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest. 

Attributing his success to supportive staff and grateful patients, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.  

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the chest. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Indiana and Ohio, Dr. Kuhn III has been the recipient of several awards and honors throughout his extensive career. These include: Compassionate Doctor Recognition (Ambassador 2012),  Go the Extra Mile award 2012- present and multiple Patients’ Choice Awards.
