In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Cazares earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan in 1978.

Following his education, he became board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties. He also attained membership status with the American Osteopathic Association.
