Get to know Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Jay C. Albright, who serves patients throughout the State of Colorado.
Dr. Albright, a fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist, is the Surgical Director of Sports Medicine at Children’s Hospital Colorado. He offers pediatric care to patients at the following locations: North Campus, Broomfield; Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora; and South Campus, Highlands Ranch.
Children’s Hospital Colorado is one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation, helping kids across Colorado and the west. It has 434 pediatric beds at its main campus in Aurora, with a mission “to improve the health of children through the provision of high-quality, coordinated programs of patient care, education, research, and advocacy.”
“A youth athlete is not the same as a professional athlete and should not be treated as such. The focus of my career is the treatment of the young athlete in particular” expressed Dr. Albright. His clinical interests include injury prevention for athletes as well as the care of sports-related injuries, including treatment of elbow, shoulder, knee, ankle, and hip injuries. He also specializes in clubfoot and is trained in the Ponseti method.
A 1998 graduate of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Albright went on to perform his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He then completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Rady Children’s Hospital in 2004, followed by an additional fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in 2005.
With over two decades of experience in his field, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Albright remains a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Magellan Society, the Pediatric Academic Research Society, the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society, and Research in Osteochondritis of the Knee. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
As for his research efforts, he is interested in maximizing outcomes for ACL injuries and reducing re-tear rates, particularly in the female athlete. That includes gait analysis post-injury ACL and post-surgical ACL. He is also interested in the description of surgical technique for reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament, cartilage regeneration and resurfacing, reduction of pain symptoms after surgery, and the overall prevention of sports injuries.
Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. A sports medicine specialist is a physician with significant specialized training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury.
Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Albright has been the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017), On-Time Doctor Award (2009), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014), and Patients’ Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012).
On a more personal note, he is interested in all types of sports, from soccer and basketball to field hockey, volleyball, cheerleading, dance, and more. He was on the Special Olympics Board of Directors in Florida and is currently on the International Board for Rush Soccer.
