Maitland DeLand, M. D. is a radiation oncologist who specializes in treating women’s and children’s cancers. She has dealt with her own children’s illnesses including Type 1 Diabetes, Epilepsy and Asthma.  As a result of her personal and professional experiences she realized there was a need for simple, comforting, yet informative child and family friendly books dealing with serious childhood illnesses.  The Katie Kate Series was born! Her Children’s books are used in major teaching centers worldwide and have received the Gold Award from Mom’s Choice Awards Honoring Excellence. 

The Great Katie Kate book series is very helpful to young children diagnosed with serious medical illnesses. Using easy to understand text and engaging illustrations our superhero Katie Kate explains the illness process simply to help kids overcome their fears. Parents are frequently at a loss when their child develops a serious illness; they look for ways to comfort, protect and be strong. Reading the Katie Kate book together helps the family become unified and ready to meet this challenge.   

Be A Hero! Is a special book written with the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and is used for Trial Net, Type 1 Diabetes international research trials for prevention and cure. We encourage participation to help all those affected by this disease. All children’s books retail at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc. for $14.95 hardcover and ebooks for $3.99.
