Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Spears graduated with his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in 1970. He completed his internship at New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center in 1971, and his residency in internal medicine at the New York Medical College, Lenox Hill Hospital in 1972. 

Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of California School of Medicine in 1974, before returning to the New York Medical College to complete an additional fellowship in cardiovascular disease in 1976. He also completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1980.

As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In his professional experience, Dr. Spears maintains hospital privileges at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, and Beaumont Hospital, Troy.
