At present, Dr. Barone serves as the Director of Surgical Oncology at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a Clinical Investigator at Sharp Clinical Oncology Research, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology. 

In practice since 1976, he is also proud to be affiliated with the Breast Health Center at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a nationally recognized comprehensive breast center, fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). He provides a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care, tailored treatment plans, as well as counseling and a comprehensive breast screening program for high-risk individuals.

The doctor’s areas of clinical interest include cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for gastrointestinal tract tumors, mesothelioma, sarcoma and gynecological cancers, breast, endocrine, pancreas, and melanoma surgery, gastrointestinal oncology surgery, sentinel node mapping of breast and melanoma cancers, ovarian oncology surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and liver cancer surgery. 

Back in 1966, Dr. Barone earned his medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, also known as Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He then went on to complete his internship in general surgery, his residency in general surgery, and his fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. 

Following his training, he became board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

In addition to being a A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the San Diego Medical Society, and the California Medical Association.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Barone has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, as well as has conducted numerous oral and videotape presentations on cancer-related subjects. He is recognized for developing the hepatic infusion pump for the delivery of chemotherapy directly into the liver and the Port-a-Cath implantable port for the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs intravenously, intra arterially, and intraperitoneally. 

Back in the day, he was one of the first surgeons in the country to treat extensive cancers of the abdomen originating from the gastrointestinal tract and ovary with cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy. 

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.

Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Barone is the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), On-Time Doctor Award (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), Patients’ Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), and Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018).
