Get to know Family Physician Dr. Rita Goyal, who serves patients throughout the State of Alabama.
Dr. Goyal is a board-certified family physician with over 20 years of experience including being an emergency room physician, an urgent care physician, a private practice primary care, a hospital medicine physician and an academic medicine physician at a University based Urgent Care center, where she still sees urgent care patients.
After a particular encounter with a patient during an office visit, and a goal to make so many people’s lives better with virtual visits, she founded her own virtual medical consultation platform, VirtualMDvisit, in 2017.
“I love helping people and have always enjoyed interacting with my patients. However, over the years, I’ve realized the time has come to change the way we practice medicine. Through the years of Emergency Room work, Urgent Care work and Hospital work, I’ve treated just about every kind of patient, some in extremely serious conditions and others involved in “minor health hiccups”, meaning healthy young people with an inconvenient short term sickness or illness, and these patients have to wait the longest in a “triage” system, which can be very frustrating and inefficient, there had to be a better way…” expressed the doctor.
At the start of her academic career, Dr. Goyal graduated with her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She then went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, where she served as Class Officer and American Medical Student Association Officer.
Upon graduation, she continued her medical clinical training at St Vincent’s East Hospital where she completed her Family Practice Internship and Residency followed by an additional year training in private practice dermatology.
With over two decades of experience, she is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
“I talk to patients over the phone all the time, listening to their concerns and stories. Asking questions and communication are vital to appropriate healthcare delivery. I love being able to make a difference in someone’s day, particularly when I get to help them feel better quickly” stated Dr. Goyal.
Both a practicing doctor and an entrepreneur, she was appointed Chief Medical Officer at ConcertCare, a Birmingham-based international healthcare technology company, in late July of 2018.
“ConcertCare understands the pain health care providers are experiencing today, and the multitude of uncontrollable pressures pulling physicians and their practices further away from their core mission of patient-centered health care. I want to bring patients and their doctors back in harmony — in a relationship again, if you will — these days real connections are thriving in video chats and Facetime, so why not medical relationships?” noted Dr. Goyal.
As someone who loves giving back to her community, her philanthropic work started in Birmingham in her early years out of graduate school and since that time she has continued to be an active member of her community. She is the chairman of YouthServe’s Board of Directors and is an active board member of several institutions both at a local level and a state level. Her enthusiasm and passion for health education inspired her to join the American Heart Association (AHA) in the awareness campaign for Women’s heart disease and stroke in 2014 to 2018. She is a Circle of Red Member and Cor Vitae member of the AHA.
Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.
A multi-award winner, Dr. Goyal is the recipient of Birmingham Metro’s Best Docs Award for 2015 and 2016 & the B-Metro’s Best Women Doctors Award for 2017 and 2018.
Happily married to her husband, Munish K. Goyal, MD, they have two wonderful children together. In her spare time, she serves on the Altamont School Board of Trustees, enjoys hiking and horse-riding trails with friends, spending time with her family outdoors, snow-skiing, fishing, and being active near the water. She also serves on the Board of Tennessee Riverkeepers, “her childhood river”, and is a part of the National Waterkeepers Alliance.
