Get to know Family Physician Dr. Katherine Blalock, who serves patients in Bryan and Navasota, Texas.
As a board-certified physician in family medicine, Dr. Blalock specializes in a wide range of primary care topics, including geriatric and pediatric health. She is affiliated with Texas A&M Health Science Center, practicing at Family Care Bryan & Family Care Navasota.
There, she strives to make sure her patients are up to date on their preventative health screenings and controlling their chronic medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. She has expertise in weight loss, family planning, and immunizations.
With teaching interests in geriatrics and hospital medicine, Dr. Blalock serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine.
Her interest in medicine began at an early age, when she found herself intrigued by visits to the doctor’s office and took an interest in how the doctors and nurses learned to do their jobs. Her parents recall that even as a young child, she would always answer that she wanted to be a physician when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. As a teen, she had the opportunity to shadow several of the hometown physicians who had first sparked her interest in the profession, further cementing her interest.
In 2011, Dr. Blalock achieved her childhood dream and completed her medical degree at Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2011. While she loved that medicine allowed her to combine science, research, and solving complex puzzles, she was most drawn to the opportunities that it presented to make connections with her patients, leading her to specialize in family medicine at the same educational venue.
Thriving on the variety of cases and patients inherent in practicing family medicine, she is board-certified through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
A certified medical examiner for DOT physicals, Dr. Blalock is affiliated with the following hospitals: CHI St. Joseph College Station Hospital, CHI St. Joseph Regional Health Center, and CHI St. Joseph Health Grimes Hospital.
Among her professional affiliations, she is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.
In 2020, Dr. Blalock was named family medicine preceptor for the AIM program at Texas A&M College of Medicine, and she looks forward to increasing her teaching presence in the next several years.
In recognition of her compassion and attention to detail, she was designated as a Texas Rising Star Physician in 2020 and has been named Best Family Medicine Provider in Grimes County, Texas, each year since 2016. She attributes her success to the collaboration and support of her clinic team and to being able to practice in her hometown, and plans to continue her work for as long as she is able.
Deeply involved in community service, Dr. Blalock served on the Board of Directors of Health For All, a free health care clinic offering preventive and specialist services to low-income patients in the Brazos County region, for more than six years.
In her personal time, she enjoys playing flute and piano, and is an active member of her faith community, directing and performing in her church’s choir.
In five years’ time, she plans to continue practicing medicine in her hometown and aims to expand her role in geriatric care and long-term care facilities. She also plans to remain living one day at a time and starting each day with a prayer.
