Physician, Engineer, and Entrepreneur Specializing in in the Field of Medical Technology

Dr. Lloyd Marks has found that education and experience in medicine, engineering, and business have allowed him to communicate with and among professionals that traditionally have difficulty communicating with one another. Trained initially as an electrical engineer at MIT and, later, as a board-certified pediatric cardiologist at Johns Hopkins (at the inception of interventional pediatric cardiology), Dr. Marks is a man with diverse interests and achievements. These have involved caring for children with heart disease, inventing medical devices (and sports equipment), and founding startup companies, one of which, MGI Medical, LLC, is commercializing his invention, the “Pulse Flowmeter” which can detect occult (hidden) blood loss, commonly seen in post-operative patients and GI bleeders, early, well before there are changes in blood pressure. He is mentoring startup companies at the entrepreneurship centers at the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida, is developing an intellectual property seminar for the University of Tampa, resurrecting a Tampa chapter of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (SoPE), and is participating on the medical advisory board of NeuroEM, a Tampa startup that is developing a device that uses RF (radiofrequency radiation) to provide a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. HHe has also founded Medical Invention Consulting, LLC, through which he provides advice regarding the evaluation, protection, improvement, human factors, and commercialization of new medical technology to startups, inventors, investors conducting due diligence, corporations considering the commercialization of new medical technology and patent law firms.

After receiving his education at MIT and the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Marks honed his skills through various roles in academic medicine, including positions at prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. After transitioning to private practice in 1997, he continued caring for children and adults with congenital heart disease, as well as innovating. He has been awarded 27 patents to date and has several others pending and/or being prepared.

After stopping the practice of clinical medicine in 2015, Dr. Marks obtained an MBA at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam School of Business, to further enhance his entrepreneurial acumen. His dual board certifications in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology, coupled with fellowships in organizations like the American College of Cardiology and the American Association of Medical and Biological Engineering attest to his engineering expertise and dedication to patient care.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Marks values his family deeply and enjoys hobbies including sailing, photography, scuba diving, playing the guitar and skiing. Settling in Tampa in January 2024, he has quickly become integrated into the Tampa entrepreneurial and educational ecosystems. He says that moving to Tampa was the best geographic change he’s ever made and has rapidly become an enthusiastic booster of the city. Not to mention that he now lives less than 2 miles from his son and adorable grandkids.

In a professional world where niches can be developed by crossing boundaries between disciplines, Dr. Lloyd Marks shines as a beacon of interdisciplinary excellence, embodying a blend of medical expertise, engineering ingenuity, and an entrepreneurial spirit that sets him apart in the healthcare landscape.
