Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Kathy O’Connell, who serves patients in Newport News, Virginia.

Dr. O’Connell, an admired obstetrician-gynecologist, is the owner & operator of Peninsula Women’s Care in Newport News, Virginia. “My patients really are part of my family. I’m privileged to be a part of their life’s journey and I treasure the long-term relationships that we develop.”

Serving women in Hampton Roads since 1992, Peninsula Women’s Care is dedicated to providing patients with excellent customer service and compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare. It is a division of Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care, PLC.

Born and raised on the Peninsula, Dr. O’Connell graduated from Tabb High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She then went on to earn her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, after which she performed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Drexel University.

With a passion for her profession, she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

In order to serve those in great need of spiritual and medical care, Dr. O’Connell has a passion for traveling to the most remote parts of Uganda and Kenya. She is also the Board Vice-President of Carenet, the Board Vice-President of OneChurch, and a Board Member of He Intends Victory (a Christian Ministry that ministers to those affected by and infected with HIV/AIDS).

In direct affiliation with her industry, she is a member of the American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.

Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health. 

Recognized as an authority in her field, Dr. O’Connell is the recipient of Mary Immaculate Hospital “Partners in Healing” Award (2005), and has been featured in “Health Care Hero,” Inside Business Journal (2011) and “40 Influential Women of Virginia,” Virginia Lawyers Weekly (2015).

When she is not practicing medicine, she enjoys eating chocolate, reading books, riding her dirt bike, as well as volunteering and serving the community. She lives in Yorktown with her husband, Jim, and is blessed with a daughter, Katie, and a son, James.
