Painless swelling in the knee joint or surrounding structures could represent inflammation from overuse; a systemic condition associated with arthritis or an idiosyncratic response. If it continues, it warrants a medical evaluation. Good luck, Dr. L READ MORE

  • Should I take cephalexin 250MG capsules?

You should be evaluated by a physician so soon after a hip replacement surgery to avoid any kind of infection. The type of preventive antibiotic is different than cephalexin. Contact your PCP and/or orthopedic surgeon! Good luck, Dr. L READ MORE

  • How do you treat bursitis of the elbow?

The name of the game is to reduce inflammation with ice, anti-inflammatory medications and compression/protection with an elbow sleeve. Occasionally, the swelling and fluid accumulation necessitates drainage or surgical excision. There is some risk of infection with olecranon bursitis. Orthoinfo.org will have additional credible information. Good luck, Dr. L READ MORE

  • Knee pain?

Cross country runners usually get overuse type injuries. In a 14-year-old, Osgood-Schlatter's is very likely which is due to inflammation at the tibial tubercle as the bone grows faster than the patellar tendon. An explanation can be found on orthoinfo.org. Ice and stretching are the main tenets of treatment. Osgood-Schlatter's is self limited, so it stops when the rapid bone growth slows down. A return visit to an orthopedic surgeon can confirm the diagnosis and provide further insight. Good luck with CC, Dr. Louden READ MORE

  • How do you stop a bunion from progressing?

Bunions progress due to improper shoes as far as a modifiable risk factor. A wide toe box is the best way to prevent accentuating the deformity. There are a number of braces or supports that you can try, but they are not well tolerated nor prevent progression. Good luck, Dr. L READ MORE

  • Swollen Joints

The most likely cause is worsening of osteoarthritis in your knees. Ice, heat, over-the-counter analgesics combined with gradual increase in exercise. In general, knees like to move without much pounding so bicycling or swimming are best if possible. Walking on forgiving surfaces is okay, too. If your knees continue to bother you, an orthopedic surgeon could certainly help. Good luck, Keith READ MORE

The X-ray is not the most sensitive test for a stress fracture. If you are having pain with weight bearing in your tibia or shin.
