  • I think I may be depressed. What do I do?

If you have never had any prior history of depression, this could be situational based on a sudden change in your day to day routine. However, even situational depression can be debilitating. The options tend to be low dose antidepressant (typically monitored by a psychiatrist) along with seeing a therapist to help you develop some coping tools to manage this change in your life and get back to feeling yourself. • Sudden mental fatigue--what can it be?

There can be a number of causes for mental fatigue and this needs a full and comprehensive history and work-up to try to narrow down the cause. Sometimes abnormal labs such as thyroid, B12 or others can contribute to poor motivation/focus/energy. Other medical issues could contribute to this as well, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea that is untreated as a quite common one. Quite often lack of motivation/focus energy occur along with mood symptoms, such as low mood or anxiety. Poor focus/attention can also be incontext of other issues such as ADHD, however this tends to be more chronic (long-term) and not an issue out of the blue- but nevertheless may be as a possibility. The next best step is to likely make an appointment with your primary physician and see their recommendations. If you are also experiencing issues with mood/anxiety as well, I would recommend to go ahead and make an appointment with a specialist, such as a psychiatrist for further investigation. READ MORE

Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Ashley Toutounchi, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Toutounchi, a board-certified psychiatrist, is the Founder of Aura MD in Houston, Texas. Incorporating both medication management in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes, she offers the highest quality psychiatric care for most mental health issues, including adult ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, women’s health issues, and a variety of other behavioral health issues. She communicates openly with her patients, considers each patient’s treatment goals, and seamlessly fuses into a medically appropriate therapeutic regimen for most common psychiatric conditions.

Acknowledging the strong connection between mental and physical health, she also has integrative wellness options available to her patients for weight optimization, genetic testing, medical grade supplements, and peptide therapies to fully recharge the mind and body.

Previously, Dr. Toutounchi previously served as a Director of a large outpatient psychiatric group in Houston. However, she envisioned herself in a more individualized and personalized practice with a more inviting environment for each unique patient.

With this in mind, She founded Aura MD to be structured around a patient-centric environment in which individual issues/concerns are promptly addressed instead of placing patients on an endless assembly line structure that is highly unproductive and unsatisfactory. Her practice is centered around the expectation that each patient receives an equivalent level of quality medical care that she would expect for herself and her family.

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Texas in 2006, Dr. Toutounchi went on to obtain her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2010. This was followed by a residency within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the same educational venue, where she served as Chief Resident during her final year.

The doctor is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. She is also a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. They are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

With extensive training in medication management, Dr. Toutounchi works collaboratively with patients to help them achieve a sense of stability and optimal outcomes with her personalized approach. While she does incorporate supportive therapy/cognitive behavioral techniques into sessions, she values the importance of working with the patient’s therapist(s) to coordinate care.

In recognition of her clinical success, she has received the distinction of TopDoc of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. She has also received the following recognition from direct patient feedback that shows repeated excellence in a variety of areas: Vitals Patients’ Choice Award, Vitals On-Time Doc Award, Vitals Compassionate Doctor Recognition, and Healthgrades Honor Roll.
