From Neonatology to Quality Improvement, Dr. Hageman’s Remarkable Journey

Joseph R. Hageman, MD, is a retired pediatrician and neonatologist with a career spanning over 30 years in clinical practice, education, and research. He completed his Bachelor of Arts at Augustana College in 1973, followed by his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 1977. He then trained in pediatrics at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University from 1977 to 1982, including a specialized fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine from 1980 to 1982.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hageman has served in various roles, including as a neonatologist, pediatric intensivist, and pediatric hospitalist at NorthShore’s Evanston Hospital. From 1993 to 1995, he managed medically complex pediatric patients at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, while simultaneously serving as a consultant for infants with apnea and other respiratory issues from 1982 to 2007. For 15 years, he edited the Illinois Pediatrician newsletter and later directed pediatric resident research at Comer Children’s Hospital, University of Chicago, from 2012 to 2016.

Currently, Dr. Hageman holds multiple prestigious appointments. He is the Director of Quality Improvement for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Comer Children’s Hospital, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and a faculty member at Touro University Illinois. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Annals and serves on the editorial board of Neonatology Today.

Board certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine, Dr. Hageman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Illinois Chapter, the American Association of SIDS Prevention Physicians, and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. 

With over 400 publications to his name, Dr. Hageman attributes his success to his pleasant persistence and his deep commitment to caring for babies, children, and adolescents. His passions include clinical research, teaching, writing, and editing.

In addition to his professional work, Dr. Hageman is committed to philanthropy, supporting numerous organizations dedicated to health and child welfare, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, March of Dimes, Doctors Without Borders, St. Jude’s, and both Evanston and Lurie Children’s Hospitals.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hageman cherishes family trips to Puerto Rico, where they enjoy the beauty and warmth of the island together. In his downtime, he loves playing basketball and baseball, as well as collecting rare books—especially works by Charles Dickens.
