A native of Iraq, he earned his medical degree from the Al-Mustansiriya College of Medicine in Baghdad. After relocating to the United States, he furthered his education by completing his internship and residency at the Chicago Medical School. Finally, he completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
