Dr. Chris L. Tye, MD, DDS is a Board Certified Oral Surgeon with over 25 years’ experience located centrally to Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. His services include the removal of wisdom teeth, dental implants for missing teeth, All-on-Four Implants for secure dentures, extractions and IV Conscious Sedation. Our goal at Texas Oral Surgery Specialists is to ensure the highest possible level of care and patient safety. How long does novocaine last after wisdom tooth removal?
There are several local anesthetics used by dentists. Most commonly, Lidocaine (aka Xylocaine) is used. Duration can vary depending upon the amount used and the location of the injection. Most often, one may expect a local anesthetic to last 1-2 hours, unless a long-acting anesthetic, such as Marcaine, was used which may last 4-8 hours. Another consideration with lower wisdom teeth removal is that the nerve is often very close to the roots and some "bruising" of the nerve may occur upon removal of the wisdom tooth which may prolong the numbing hours or even days or weeks. My wisdom tooth is aching. Is it better to have it extracted?
Wisdom Teeth often create problems including inflammation or infection in the gum tissue, decay, and or gum disease. Wisdom teeth that do not have room to erupt and/or cause any of the above problems should be evaluated by an oral surgeon for possible treatment. READ MORE
Adult tooth is loose. What should I do?
As a general rule, trauma to teeth that causes pain or displacement should be promptly evaluated by your oral surgeon or dentist. An Exam and Radiographs can determine the extent of damage and whether the 1) tooth is loose in the socket, 2) the surrounding bone is damaged, and/or 3) the tooth is fractured. If the tooth had pre-existing decay or gum disease, the ability to save the tooth may be jeopardized. If the tooth is considered salvageable, generally, it needs to be held in place by splinting. A soft diet is often recommended. Traumatically injured teeth ultimately may need root canals. If teeth ultimately need to be removed, dental implants are often an option for tooth replacement. Risk of nerve damage during impacted wisdom tooth surgery?
A thorough exam and x-rays by your oral surgeon or dentist can determine if wisdom teeth are indicated to be removed. Indications to remove wisdom teeth include, but are not limited to: infection, gum disease, decay, cyst, and/or crowding. Frequently patients elect to have wisdom teeth removal performed with IV conscious sedation under the care of an oral surgeon. Any surgical removal has the potential of complications, including but not limited to: infection, pain, delayed healing, numbness to lip/chin and/or tongue, and damage to nearby structures including teeth or sinuses. Although rare, numbness to the lip, chin and or tongue, possibly including the loss of taste, can follow the removal of lower wisdom teeth.
