Get to know Hospice and Palliative Medicine Specialist Dr. Arnold Kop, who serves patients in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Kop is a board certified hospice and palliative medicine specialist with over three decades of experience. His affiliations extend to Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children and Straub Medical Center.

Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children is part of Hawaii Pacific Health’s network of hospitals. It is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, within the residential inner-city district of Makiki.

Straub Medical Center is a not-for-profit health care system with a 159-bed hospital in Honolulu, and a network of neighborhood clinics. Its mission is ‘to create a healthier Hawaii.’

A 1989 graduate of the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine, Dr. Kop went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center from 1989-1992. 

With a devotion to his profession, the doctor is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Both palliative care and hospice care are focused on the needs of the patient and their quality of life. Palliative care focuses on maintaining the highest quality of life while managing treatment and other needs. Hospice care specifically focuses on the period closest to death. Hospice and palliative medicine specialists are medical doctors who help prevent and relieve suffering of patients who have a serious illness or who have only a short time left to live. They work with a team of other professionals to address the needs of both the patient and loved ones.
