Asthma attacks can occur anytime without warning It can be scary. These are the steps: 1. Make sure she is under the care of a physician. 2. Be sure she never runs out of her medications ( inhalers) 3. She must have the inhalers within her reach at all times. 4. My mom has chronic kidney disease and now suffers from water retention. What should I do?
Yes, you should be concerned. She needs to see a nephrologist to decide if she is a candidate for dialysis. Medicines may not work since her kidneys are working well. She needs medical attention urgently. If water builds up, there is risk of heart failure. READ MORE
What should I do if my child has a fever of 102?
Please know that younger the child, higher the urgency to get medical care. EG: a month old child with 102 fever needs urgent attention compared to a ten year old. If the child looks sick to you and or not acting her normal, yes go to ER or doctors office. You could give sponge bath with tap water ( not ice cold water) this helps evaporate the heat. Do not give aspirin in any form. Liquid Tylenol or liquid ibuprofen is ok. Best advice I can give you is to get the child seen by a physician. The reason could be viral or more serious bacterial infection. Early better than late, get to the doctor. READ MORE
What should be the first few steps in case of hypoglycemia?
Immediate steps for hypoglycemia: 1. Recognize the symptoms and confirm by checking finger stick blood sugar. 2. If sugar is low, give sugar containg items such as orange juice, fruit punch etc 3. Recheck sugar after an hour 4. If symptoms do not improve call 911 and go to the mearest ER 5. Stroke mimics hypoglycemia 6. If this happens again and again, you need to find the cause. 7. Current medication may need to changed or dosage adjusted 8. If she is on Insulin, extra care should be taken as to when she takes it and check exact units of insulin. Hope this helps READ MORE
What should be the first aid for nose bleeding?
My strongest recommendation is to get help at an ER, by professionals. I assume your grandfather is older and may have other health issues like heart problem, high BP, and he may be on aspirin and blood thinners. All these must be considered. Having said that, you can offer “First Aid” for nose bleeds: 1. Calm him, reassure him 2. Make him sit up 3. Pinch the soft part of his nose with thumb and index fingers 4. Ask him to breathe through the mouth 5. Keep the nose pinched for a full ten minutes, without letting go to check if the bleeding has stopped. 6. Give him something to spit into. 7. Please get him to see a doctor. Some people have self-limiting “minor” nose bleeds. But for older patients, this can be more serious. 8. Blood pressure needs to be monitored and managed. What are the blood tests necessary in a ER?
There are no hard and fast rules that every patient has to have a set of tests. It depends on the "chief complaint" and what the physician finds on the physical examination. I would hope every doctor takes a good history and does a thorough physical exam on every patient and then decides to order "necessary tests." Common tests are CBC, blood chemistry, urine test and maybe a chest X-ray (again, depending on the patient complaint). CT scans and MRIs, ultrasounds are special tests, don't when the doctor considers serious, complicated diagnosis (e.g., brain bleed, blood clot, etc.). Hope this helps. READ MORE

Seizure is a possibility after brain injury. If there is alcohol onboard, they may be at risk for seizure, even before the injury. Many times, seizure is a complication of an old head injury as well. READ MORE
What are the first steps when someone drowns?
Get the person out of the water. Check for breathing and pulse (in case of small children, feel for pulse in the inside surface of the arm). Call for help (911). If no breathing or pulse, begin chest compressions (CPR). READ MORE

low low grade fever
if you just have low grade fever and no abdominal symptoms, it may be from viral syndrome. Peptic ulcer by itself is not known to cause fever. Low grade bladder infection is a possibility in females. If fever persists, seek medical advice. READ MORE
Stomach flu
This could be viral or food poisoning. Rest to the gastrointestinal tract is important. Don't eat solid foods until the stomach settles. Drink gatorade, Pediolyte, or fruit-flavored, non-carbonated liquids in small amounts and gradually increase as you can tolerate. If no better, seek medical advice. READ MORE
