Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Sanjay K. Patel, who serves patients in Texas.

Dr. Patel, a board certified ophthalmologist, specializes in cataract surgery, with additional focus on diabetic eye diseases, glaucoma, and general eye care. He joined Heritage Eye Center in 1999 and developed Allen Ophthalmology in 2000.

Currently serving as the Chief Surgeon at Heritage Eye Center, Dr. Patel is committed to providing the best possible eye care for patients in the flourishing communities of McKinney, Allen, and the adjacent area. He places great importance on patient engagement and education, actively involving them in the decision-making process to ensure the best possible care for their eyes.

Having resided in Texas since 1978, Dr. Patel considers himself a Texan. He completed his undergraduate degrees at Southern Methodist University in 1990 and graduated with distinction of Magna Cum Laude. He then attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, completing his Medical Degree in 1994. 

Subsequently, Dr. Patel did his internship in internal medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center from 1994-1995. Returning to Southwestern Medical School in 1995, he underwent specialized training in ophthalmology, successfully concluding his surgical training in 1998.

Board certified in ophthalmology, Dr. Patel is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists (eye physicians and surgeons) in the United States.

His professional affiliations underscore his dedication to the field, as Dr. Patel is not only a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology but also a member of the Dallas Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Texas Ophthalmology Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Collin-Fannin County Medical Society.

His commitment to the advancement of the field is evident in his role as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, where he has instructed and trained residents in performing cataract surgery at Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Hospital.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Patel finds joy in performance driving and traveling. Europe stands out as his preferred destination for travel, reflecting his passion for exploring diverse cultures and landscapes.
