With a broad educational background, she earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1978. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine at the Howard University Hospital in 1981, and her fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at the Henry Ford Hospital in 1983.

Among her professional affiliations, Dr. Tompkins is an active member of the American Medical Association, and the American Medical Women’s Association.
