Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Divya M. Varu, who serves patients in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Varu is a board-certified ophthalmologist who strives to translate the spectacular advances in medical science and technology into quality care for her patients. She specializes in the care of cataract surgery and refractive surgery patients at Dell Laser Consultants in Austin, Texas.

Dell Laser Consultants was founded to provide state-of-the-art laser eye surgical center in a kind and compassionate manner. “Our mission is to treat you exactly as we would treat a member of our own family.” as stated on their website.

With her expertise in a wide range of complex pathology, Dr. Varu has expanded the services provided at Dell Laser Consultants to include comprehensive eye care, dry eye management, and aesthetic services. She uses state-of-the-art treatments for patients with dry eye disease, keratoconus, ocular allergies, rosacea, glaucoma, retinal disease, and other concerns.

After graduating from the George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Varu completed her ophthalmology residency training at the prestigious Northwestern University. During her training, she was selected as the first chief resident and served as the resident ambassador for the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology. Interested in the precise nature of corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery, she pursued a rigorous fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, working with world-renowned surgeons. Prior to joining DLC, she was in private practice outside of Chicago and later at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, an affiliate of Stanford University.

As a fellowship-trained surgeon in iLASIK and advanced surface ablation/PRK, Dr. Varu provides a customized treatment plan for patients in order to meet their individual needs. She is also a skilled cataract and refractive lens exchange surgeon, performing surgery using full focus intraocular lens implants. Locally, she is the co-founder of the Austin Women in Vision group, which provides educational and networking opportunities to female doctors in eyecare.

Among the doctor’s achievements, she is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as a member of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Council of Ophthalmology, the Texas Medical Board, the Travis County Medical Society, and the Austin Ophthalmological Society.

She also serves on the Cornea/External Disease Preferred Practice Panel, which is a distinguished group of ophthalmologists who provide international recommendations for care to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Passionate about public service, Dr. Varu has been a medical volunteer in Cuba, Ethiopia, and India. She has worked with the United States Senate, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Public Health Association, and the American Medical Women’s Association on a variety of health care initiatives. She has been recognized for her community involvement as a finalist for the “Austin Under 40” Award in Medicine and Healthcare.
