  • Fever: To treat or not to treat

For any parent, it is agonizing to see your child in pain. That’s why generally as soon as a child’s temperature goes abound 99, there is a rush to bring down the temperature. But is medication really necessary? The answer is no, barring a couple of exceptions. Most healthy children can handle...

  • What could be the cause of breathing issues in a baby?

It depends on what you mean by trouble breathing. Babies are often congested because their noses are very small and they cant blow yet like we can. Humidifiers help in this situation because it keeps the mucous from getting thick and clogging the airways. Viral illnesses are the most common cause of congestion. If they are truly having difficulty breathing (rapid breathing, color change around lips, fatigue) they need immediate evaluation to figure out what the issue is. READ MORE

  • How can I help my child's cough at night?

Cough can be very distressing for a child (and their sleepless parent!), but can generally be managed with simple home remedies. Use of a humidifier or steam bath loosens up the mucous, making it easier to manage. If the child is old enough, cough drops can help soothe an itchy throat that may be the cause of the cough. Children over 1 can take a tablespoon of honey. Remember that cough is a response to an illness, not the illness itself. If a child is coughing, but is breathing well, they are simply moving excess mucous from their respiratory tract. READ MORE

  • How can you tell if your child has the flu?

Generally, flu causes severe body aches, high fever (over 102), cough, clear runny nose, and congestion. However, many other viruses cause the same symptoms and not everyone has the same presentation. If a child is very sick (unable to take fluids, fever over 5 days, decreased urination), seek medical attention immediately READ MORE
