Dr. Abrutyn is an orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained and board-certified in sports medicine. His specialty is the nonoperative and operative treatment of shoulder and knee injuries. His passion and focus are on tissue preservation, anatomic restoration and healing, and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Abrutyn works in the Orthopedic Department at Summit Medical Group with offices in Bridgewater and Warren, New Jersey. He treats children over the age of 10, athletes, and adults. His surgical practice focuses on the treatment of the shoulder and knee with a primary emphasis on advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures.
Dr. Abrutyn states that “As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor. My interest in orthopedics sparked when I tore my ACL in high school, and I benefited from outstanding treatment that made it possible for me to eventually run the New York Marathon and continue playing basketball. My passion for athletics, fitness, and medicine made orthopedic surgery a natural and gratifying career choice. In addition to helping establish realistic expectations, educating my patients about their conditions and treatment options allows them to partner with me to achieve the best possible outcomes.”
Professionally, Dr. Abrutyn holds many positions, including team physician at Immaculata High School – Athletics (since 2005), team physician for the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club (since 2016), and President of the Somerset Ambulatory Surgery Center (since 2014). He is also actively involved in the treatment of athletes from the Skyland High School Athletic Conference.
Aided by his expertise, he championed and implemented the Joint Surgery Center at RWJ University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey. This is a comprehensive, patient-centric total joint replacement program that is nationally recognized with the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. He is currently the Medical Director of the Athletic Trainer and Sports Performance service line at RWJ University Hospital Somerset.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1995, Dr. Abrutyn went on to obtain his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1999. He then completed his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at Northshore University Hospital/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2004, followed by his fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine in Long Beach, CA.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS), the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery, with sub-specialization in sports medicine, by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
Dr. Abrutyn is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the New Jersey Orthopedic Society.
Orthopedic Surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.
Among his numerous accolades and achievements, Dr. Abrutyn has authored a chapter on ACL reconstruction techniques in the book The Knee: AANA Advanced Surgical Techniques. He has been an invited lecturer and instructor on knee ligament and cartilage repair courses, as well as has earned several awards for his expertise in the field (On-Time Doctor Award, Patients’ Choice Award, Compassionate Doctor Recognition, Compassionate Doctor Award – 5 Year Honoree, etc.).
Dr. Abrutyn and his family are proud supporters of the Melanoma Research Foundation, the YMCA Strong Kids Foundation, Bonnie Brae, and the Summit Medical Group Foundation.
Outside of practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, spinning, and working out.
