Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Nicholas G. Donas, who serves patients throughout the State of New York.
Dr. Donas, a board-certified ophthalmologist, knew that he wanted to be a doctor early in life. His father struggled with glaucoma and blindness in one eye, which was his inspiration in choosing his specialty. “I knew I could make a difference in the lives of patients like my father.”
At present, the doctor can be found on staff at St. John’s Riverside Hospital – Dobbs Ferry Pavilion and St. John’s Riverside Hospital – Andrus Pavilion. Their mission is to provide accessible, effective, efficient, and technologically advanced health care services to the community. These services include: emergency services, inpatient acute care ambulatory surgery services, outpatient diagnosis and treatment, health/wellness education, and screening programs along with support groups for the benefit of those it serves.
In association with Mount Sinai, Dr. Donas is also affiliated with The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Hospital – both of which are located in New York City, New York.
One of the ways in which he makes his patients feel comfortable talking to him is by putting them at ease. “I make a point to speak in terms everyone can understand and I am always honest with my patients. It is important to me that I am available and that I give each the time they need to have their questions answered.” he stated.
In 1999, Dr. Donas earned his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Upon graduation, he went on to complete his internship in internal medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, followed by his residency in ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Before long, he became board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
