A graduate of Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, Dr. Helfman subsequently obtained a master’s degree from Roswell Park Memorial Cancer Institute. He completed his surgical and urological residency at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark and brought his urological practice to Essex County in 1988.
Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Newark Beth Israel Physician Hospital Association, as well as remains affiliated with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (of which he is a past President), Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and The Stone Center of New Jersey. He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees for both the Saint Barnabas Healthcare System and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Among the doctor’s professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Urological Association, the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Essex County Medical Society, the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, the New York Academy of Medicine, the Urology Society of New Jersey, the New York Section of American Urological Association, the Essex County Health Organization, Metro West IPA, and Metro Essex IPA.
With over 30 years of experience practicing urology, Dr. Helfman has honed his skills in numerous urologic procedures, including prostatectomy (prostate removal by surgery, laser or minimally invasive procedures), kidney stones, bladder cancer, vasectomy, endoscopy, and many other urological conditions.
Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
Acknowledged for his achievements in the field of urology, Dr. Helfman has co-authored numerous journal articles on prostate cancer therapy and received the Gloria Gallo Award for cancer research in 2001.
