Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Zyad Kafri, who serves patients in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.

Dr. Kafri is one of the hematologist-oncologists at Ascension St. John Hospital Academic Hematology Oncology Specialists. He offers up-to-date evidence-based practice of hematology and clinical oncology with a special interest in benign and malignant hematological conditions and lung cancer in addition to rare cancers.

Ascension St. John Hospital Academic Hematology Oncology Specialists deliver care to patients with blood disorders and blood cancers. They listen to patients’ healthcare needs and concerns and answer their questions. Then, they deliver a care plan with personalized cancer treatments and support programs. 

In Syria, Dr. Kafri graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of Damascus University. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology-oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), he is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Licensed to practice medicine in Michigan, Dr. Kafri is affiliated with Ascension St. John Hospital and Ascension Michigan Macomb-Oakland Hospital.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Among Dr. Kafri’s various accolades include Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2015, 2014, 2009, 2008), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014), and On-Time Doctor Award (2018).
