How can I help my baby sleep with an ear infection?
It can be so tough for little ones to sleep when they have an ear infection. The pressure from fluid in the middle ear space increases when lying down and this heightens their discomfort or pain. To help your young child sleep with an ear infection, you can try: READ MORE
vaccines
Tuberculosis (TB) vaccines (called BCG) are used in some parts of the world to prevent severe TB disease, like TB meningitis. Where I practice in the United States, the TB vaccine is only used in rare circumstances where a child is exposed to or especially at risk of TB infection. Much of Central America, South America, Asia, Africa and parts of Europe continue to use the TB vaccine more regularly or in all children. This typically depends on the amount of TB circulating in each country. You can check with a local medical provider or with the local health department to find out more about the use of the TB vaccine in your area. READ MORE
When to take toddler to Urgent Care?
It can be tough for a parent to know when a child should be seen in Urgent Care or the Emergency Department. Most pediatric practices have a 24 hour nurse advice line that can be called and this is often a good idea as the person on call has access to your child’s specific medical history. In general, your child has some findings that are reassuring and some that might warrant a visit to Urgent Care. He no longer has a fever and that is reassuring at this point in his illness. It sounds like he is also urinating enough which is also reassuring. However, he sounds very lethargic. Kids are often weak and tired during an illness, but given that it has been 5 days and he continues to be so lethargic, it would be good to have him evaluated by a medical provider in person soon. I hope this helps and hope he feels better quickly! READ MORE
Can child pneumonia go away on its own?
Pneumonia is an infection of the air space sacs in the lungs. This type of infection can be caused by viruses or by bacteria. A child’s immune system can effectively fight off some viral pneumonias without specific treatment. However, because of the location of the infection, a child with pneumonia should be under the care of a medical provider. A medical provider generally will listen to the lungs, watch to see how the child is breathing, check oxygen saturation levels and make a determination of when the child should be seen again to check for worsening or improvement. If your child hasn’t been evaluated by a medical provider, that’s an important step. If you notice your child has worsening symptoms like fast or heavy breathing, decreasing energy levels, or inability to keep well hydrated, those are reasons to seek care quickly. Hope she feels better soon! READ MORE
How can i help my symptoms
Hi there, I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well. You seem to have pharyngitis, an infection of your throat. It can be caused by a virus or bacteria. The most common bacterial cause of your symptoms is Strep throat. It’s impossible to know whether viral or bacterial without a test. I’d recommend going to a medical provider to have a throat swab (this isn’t hard or painful, just like a q-tip getting a bit of saliva from your tonsils) tested for Strep throat. If the test is positive , you should be treated with antibiotics. In the meantime, most people find some relief from ibuprofen, warm fluids to drink like tea or soup, and throat lozenges. Take care and feel better soon! READ MORE
What's wrong with me?
Thanks so much for your question and listing your symptoms so thoroughly. It sounds like you should be evaluated by your primary care physician very soon to evaluate a few things. It could be as simple as needing to drink more water and ensure you have a reasonable salt intake throughout the day, but you need to have some evaluation done to determine what is causing your symptoms. If you don't have a primary care physician, you can contact your local health department to ask for help. You can ask a trusted adult (your parent or guardian or even a school teacher) to help you get an appointment scheduled. Please get evaluated soon and take care of yourself! Dr. Hicks READ MORE
Giving my child two different medications
Vick's Children's Night Cough and Congestion Relief medication can be given at the same time as Motrin for fever. However, there is one ingredient in Vick's formulation that can give some children uncomfortable side effects. The phenylephrine ingredient can cause some children to have short-term anxiety, restlessness, or an uncomfortably fast heart rate. These side effects don't happen to all children, but to enough of them that I generally discourage using it unless nasal congestion is really preventing sleep. You can also try nasal saline drops or spray, humidified air (from a humidifier or a steamy shower), or warm baths to loosen congestion, and sleeping a bit more upright with 2 pillows can help. I hope your child is feeling better soon! READ MORE
What does my son have
Your son's symptoms are consistent with one of many viruses that are currently circulating in the United States, such as influenza, adenovirus, enterovirus, and others. Most of these viruses cause a self-limiting illness, meaning they will resolve on their own in a week or so. It is important to keep your child well hydrated by offering frequent sips and drinks of liquids like water, Pedialyte, or other drinks. Given the duration of his symptoms, he should be seen by a medical provider soon to ensure he is not dehydrated and to check his physical exam for findings of other complications or illnesses. Regarding his daycare having free-range chickens, it is unlikely, but there are very rare cases of Avian influenza that can be spread from chickens to humans (again, super rare that this happens). Typically the person has had contact with sick or dead chickens, so if the chickens at his daycare are not sick, this is probably not something to worry about but ask your medical provider. Hope he is feeling better soon! READ MORE
