Dr. Butcher, who has a special interest in mental health and development, emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with his patients and their families. “Pediatrics is about relationships with the children, who are our patients, and their families. I genuinely love and care for my patients, and it is my goal to be the best pediatrician for them that I can,” he shares. This heartfelt approach has made him a cherished figure in the Newport News community.
Born and raised in Newport News, Dr. Butcher’s educational journey began at Menchville High School, followed by an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry at Washington and Lee University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1993. He then earned his Medical Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1997, after which he did his residency in pediatrics at Vidant Health (East Carolina University) in Greenville, North Carolina.
As a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Butcher exemplifies the standards of excellence in pediatric care. Since beginning his practice in 1999 at Peninsula Pediatrics, he has dedicated over two decades to the health and well-being of children in the area. After co-founding Pediatrics at Oyster Point in 2012 and taking full ownership in 2016, Dr. Butcher has continued to foster a nurturing and welcoming environment for families seeking quality pediatric healthcare.
His impact extends beyond his clinical practice; Dr. Butcher has been actively engaged in the educational development of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and medical students as a preceptor and mentor. He has also served as a mentor for Governor’s school students and has served on the Children’s Health Network Board of Directors for many years as the Peninsula representative.
His commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed; Dr. Butcher has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his illustrious career, including Top Doc in Virginia, courtesy of Virginia Magazine, Top 100 list of providers in the country, and Top Doc multiple times, courtesy of FindaTopDoc organization where he has been featured in a national magazine.
Dr. Butcher is a passionate advocate for children’s literacy, blending storytelling and creative artwork in his practice. In 2022, he published his first children’s book, Little Speck—a delightful, rhyming story designed to inspire and entertain children of all ages.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Butcher enjoys spending quality time with his family, including his wife, Valerie, and their two children, Jacob and Alyssa. He loves music, gardening, traveling, and all things Disney, while also actively participating in his local community through Menchville Baptist Church.
