Get to know Pathologist Dr. J. Mark Tuthill, who serves patients throughout the State of Michigan.
A highly trained and skilled pathologist, Dr. Tuthill is affiliated with Henry Ford Health. Namely, he holds hospital privileges at Henry Ford Hospital, Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital – Clinton Township,, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.
Over the last three decades, Dr. Tuthill has had experience and has developed expertise in several areas of pathology informatics, including: anatomic and clinical pathology laboratory information systems; digital imaging systems for pathology practice; laboratory business analytics; computer networking, particularly hospital, wireless and mobile computing networks; and computer-based education (learning), particularly web-based multimedia. His philosophy involves providing quality patient care through the application of information technology to pathology and laboratory medicine.
With a broad educational background, Dr. Tuthill graduated with his Medical Degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, Pathology in 1992. He then went on to perform his residency in pathology and laboratory medicine, and fellowship in informatics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine-Fletcher Allen Health Care in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
Following his training, Dr. Tuthill worked to create and direct that department’s Department of Pathology Informatics followed by creation of the Division of Pathology Informatics at Henry Ford Health. He was active in organized medicine throughout his training and professional career, having served as membership officer for the ASCP-RPS, delegate to the CAP-RF and AMA-YPS, and resident representative to the CAP, and the ASCP’s Informatics and Education Committees.
At present, Dr. Tuthill is a member of the API Governing Council, a member of the CDC’s CLIAC committee, a Delegate to the CAP, and MSMS HOD. He is a charter and sponsoring member of the API and participated in the Association’s planning council serving as the charter membership officer. Currently, he serves as the API annual conference planning co-chair. This work has given him broad exposure to the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine in a variety of practice and geographic settings.
Board certified in both clinical informatics and clinical pathology, Dr. Tuthill is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of ABPath, a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties, is to serve the public and advance the profession of pathology by setting certification standards and promoting lifelong competency of pathologists.
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods.
