  • What is the treatment for periodontitis?

Typically treatment starts with scaling and root planing, which is a deep cleaning to the bottom of the pockets. If deep pockets remain after that then periodontal surgery is needed to reduce the pockets to a level that can be maintained with regular cleanings. READ MORE

  • What is the course of treatment for bleeding and swelling gums?

If you are not having your teeth cleaned professionally, then that is the first thing to do. There are many crevices around the teeth that you cannot reach even with good brushing and flossing. The dentist or dental hygienist can also tell you if it looks like there is something more serious going on than just gingivitis. READ MORE

  • Can a tooth cleaning procedure cause inflammation?

It's likely that they left something behind and that spot needs to be cleaned again. READ MORE

  • My stitches done for gum grafting have become loose. What can I do?

The stitches for gum grafting should not be left in place more than 6 weeks or they will cause irritation. You should see the surgeon again ASAP. READ MORE

  • Gum recession

My standard answer is that you have big teeth and small jaws. If you have thin gum and bone across the teeth then over scrubbing and clenching or grinding habits make it worse. There are other reasons too, but a dentist would need to diagnose those. READ MORE

  • Concern for gum graft recovery

If this was a graft for root coverage, it is not uncommon for the top part of the graft to not stick to the tooth. It should tighten up over the next 2 – 3 weeks. By 6 weeks then we can tell how much stuck and what it will look like. If it's a little loose then do not eat on it, and use an ultrasoft toothbrush very gently, or a Q-tip or washcloth, and give it time. Good luck. READ MORE
