A devoted psychiatrist, Dr. Tharwani is the Founder, President, and Chief Medical Officer of MD Psychiatry & Emotional Health, PLLC. The practice has offices in Cary and Durham, North Carolina, where patients benefit from his clinical experience and expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy.

In his clinical role, he specializes in treating patients with clinical depression, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and personality disorders using evidence-based psychopharmacology and psychotherapy.

Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Tharwani attended the Sind Medical College for his medical education, graduating in 1990. After completing his medical degree, he undertook general psychiatry training at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine. He served as a Co-Chief Resident during his fourth year and was awarded “Best Resident of the Year” twice. He continued his training by completing a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, before joining Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, as a psychopharmacology research fellow.

Recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA), the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

With a passion for research and education, he was a faculty member at Duke University for 19 years, serving as a senior associate professor and medical director.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
