Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Hossack, who serves patients in the New York.

Dr. Hossack is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating sports injuries. He is the Director of Cartilage Restoration Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, where he specializes in meniscus repair and osteochondral allograft and autograft knee surgery. 

Based in New York, the doctor is an expert in performing arthroscopic knee surgery, including primary and revision ACL reconstruction, multiligament knee reconstruction, patella and quadriceps tendon primary repair and reconstruction, meniscus surgery, and patella instability surgery. He has a special interest in articular cartilage restoration surgery in the knee. 

Academically, Dr. Hossack graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He received his medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. While at Temple University, he received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant for Medical Students to conduct orthopedic research. 

After medical school, Dr. Hossack completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and continued his training at Montefiore to complete a fellowship in sports medicine.

As a testament to his continued education, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. It is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Dr. Hossack serves as Team Physician for several high schools in the Bronx and assists the physician team at Lehman College. In addition to teaching orthopedic residents, he teaches and supervises sports medicine fellows from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Montefiore Medical Center.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Honing his skills, Dr. Hossack is a recipient of numerous awards including Patients’ Choice Award and Most Compassionate Physician Award based on the patients’ reviews. 

Happily married, his wife, Michele, is a family physician, and they have two beautiful children, Cristina and Matthew. He speaks both English and Spanish.
