Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Gaorav P. Gupta, who serves patients in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

A highly trained radiation oncologist, Dr. Gupta works with patients at the UNC Hospitals Radiation Oncology Clinic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology, with a joint appointment in Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The UNC Hospitals Radiation Oncology Clinic provides radiation oncology services for cancer patients, based on a strong tradition of leadership, teaching, and clinical innovation in the field. In regards to his educational background, Dr. Gupta graduated with his medical degree from Cornell University in 2008, and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the same educational venue in 2009. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012, serving as Chief Resident in his final year.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

An enthusiastic researcher, he holds a research position at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, focusing on DNA damage responses, genome instability pathways, targeted therapy, and breast cancer. 

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties – the other two being surgical and medical oncology – involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Gupta has been the recipient of the 2013 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists, 2010 Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, 2007 Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award, 2006 Travel Award from the Metastasis Research Society, 2006 Julian R. Rachele Prize for Best Graduate Student Research Paper, 2005 Vincent du Vigneaud Graduate Student Research Prize, 2004 Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Predoctoral Award, and 2000 Francis E. Knock Prize in biological chemistry.
